It's our 10th birthday!
On Sunday 2nd May 1999 we got together for the first time at a hotel in Woodbridge.
To celebrate on Sunday 3rd May ALUG holds it 10th birthday bash at the Mid Suffolk Venue, Syleham and Wingfield Village Hall IP21 4LT http://www.alug.org.uk/wiki/moin.cgi/Meetings?highlight=(suffolk)#Syleham
You are all welcome and the bar will of course be open for beer and soft drinks.
If you are a member of the ALUG Facebook group you can let us know if you are coming http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=73983173855 especially if you are one of the firestarters who were there at the start.
Kit is welcome if you need some advice on fixing something or require a demo of anything Linux, post to main@lists.alug.org.uk for requests.
If you are coming and are driving please post to main@lists.alug.org.uk so those without transport can attend, the same goes for requests for a lift.
If there is anyone out there in ALUG land who is competent to make a birthday cake....
Any questions post to the list and if you get lost traveling to the venue (this is not unusual) phone BJ 07908222428 and I'll try and talk you in.
Cheers, BJ

Welcome news! Thanks, John.
I'm planning to attend (what time would it start?), though of course unforeseen circumstances may intervene.
If there's anyone who would like to be picked up along the way, please let me know.
I'll be travelling from NE Cambs (near Littlport), and my route would be
either: A: Feltwell, Brandon, Thetford
or: B: Mildenhall, Thetford
and then: Garboldisham, Diss, Scole, Syleham
though I'm happy to bend it a bit depending on where someone may wish to be picked up. This could include deviating as far North as Downham Market, or as far South as Ely (with the corresponding implications for places between either of those, and Thetford).
Looking forward to this! Ted. PS I don't bake cakes ...

2pm until 6pm is the usual time.

If people can do lists can they please put up these offers like Ted has? There is already looking like a potential lack of transport for people from Norwich.
Looking forward to this!
You aren't the only one! :)
Also, does anyone have a 1998 vintage computer spare so we can put a period distro on it? I have a clear memory of one of the early alug meets where we had a copy of Redhat 5.X or 6.0. I did find my boxed copy of Redhat 5.1 recently so it will have to be brought along for the geek factor and possibly with an old release of BeOS.
Thanks Adam

I have a 386 machine in my garage which I could donate (I don't really want it back!) and I can beat your RedHat 5 as I have a copy of RH 4.2 which accompanied a book 'Discover Linux' by Steve Qualline. So , any advance on 4.2? ;-)
Two problems. One is that I'm unlikely to come along to the meeting. I can probably drop the machine off somewhere in Norwich or Barway near Ely though (I was thinking of the route that Ted might take having read his posting) and second is that I have never powered-on the machine as it was a 'gift' from somewbody who wanted to dispose of it some years ago.
I'm intending to go. Walsham to Syleham and can pick up anyone local.
I've got a pentium 2, 300khz think that is the right age which you're welcome to use or even borrow beforehand to set up.
Be interesting to compare how ten years has advanced linux. Imagine quite a number will be on ubuntu 9.04.

Which Walsham?

Sounds about perfect!

I'm thinking of grabbing a copy of Redhat 6.0 to install as I recall (but could be wrong) that there were a few copies being handed out at the first meeting as it had been out for about a week.

iirc we were on RedHat 5.1 and copies of Suse 5.0 were being shared. I remember my linux box had RH5.0 and I did an upgrade to 5.1 from a magazine covermount between the 1st and 2nd meetings. I don't think I upgraded to 6.0 until I scrounged a disc at the 3rd meeting at the UEA. P2s were the processor common at the time, my Linux box had an AMD K6-2 550Mhz with 64Mb PC66 ram iirc.

Alug mailing list archive disagrees with you ;)

and I also note from the archives that i'd managed to snaffle a disc with Redhat 6.0 on it :) I wonder if you were thinking of Mandrake 6.0?
I'm not sure which Redhat version I was on at the time, but I have the first boxed set I originally purchased which I will be recovering from storage later this week but I'm fairly sure it was 5.1 or 5.2.

Thats it - shoot that horse his mind is going :-) It may well have been Mandrake, I reckon I upgraded from RH 5.1 to MDK 6.0 between meets then. I seem to remember now that only Mandrake supposedly had the kernel module I needed for the sound card I was using at the time but it wouldn't work and I had to compile my first kernel. I definetly remember Laurie had a Suse 5.0 disk set at alug 1.0 because I was amazed at the amount of cds there were (5 or 6) in the set. I think at the time it was RH 6 with Gnome/Enlightenment or MDK 6 with KDE. Thanks for the memory jog Adam, oh happy days...

Wasn't it the case that Mandrake 6.0 shipped with a load of broken packages too? Which meant lots of downloading to get it working nicely. I also remember that you were a bit preoccupied that day and kept checking your mobile every few minutes ;)

Yes MDK 6.0 was particularly fscked out of the box. And yes I was a little preoccupied but no mobile, I remember using the hotel's payphone. I either didn't have a mobile or couldn't get a signal, however BJ junior number 3 didn't arrive until the Wednesday after the meeting thankfully!

As I remember it, it was about the same time as CivCTP was released for Linux too - and I seem to remember a few "trial" CDs being handed out... I seem to remember also having Quake II running on my K6 2 450 at the time, think I even had a massive 256M of memory at that time! Was also the only meet where my little brother came with me... he spent most of it playing on my little linux box :)
Did we not also have some people with wearables at that meeting, all those years ago? I think at that point I had started to run SuSE, my Debian install happened all of 4 months later when I got to UEA - only took another year before I dropped sendmail and moved to exim... then the world was a good place, and I've not looked back since :)

It's our 10th birthday!
On Sunday 2nd May 1999 we got together for the first time at a hotel in Woodbridge.
To celebrate on Sunday 3rd May ALUG holds it 10th birthday bash at the Mid Suffolk Venue, Syleham and Wingfield Village Hall IP21 4LT
Unfortunately, I won't able to make it as I have a viva shortly after this weekend. :/
Hope everyone has a good time, tho. Real shame I can't make it ...
Peter.
Hi all,
Largely because I've found out I can't make it to Syleham, I'm proposing a post-birthday bash pubmeet at the Reindeer on Sunday evening. That's an extra pubmeet in addition to the usual 2nd Thursday :) (I missed last months!)
So I'm suggesting:
ALUG 10th birthday after-party Reindeer public house Dereham road Norwich
Sunday 3rd May Any time from 7 or so (I gather the birthday do finishes about 6).
Anyone who's up for this please reply so I don't end up in the Reindeer on me tod :)
Cheers folks, Steve

Hey Steve,
I'm hoping to turn up to this maybe around 8pm, the kids will certainly be tired and grumpy after Alug so I need to get them to bed blah blah, but after this I will try and make it to the pub.
Thanks Adam

I'm up for going to the Reindeer, as I'll be in Norwich. Also, I won't be able to make it to Syleham.
Look forward to seeing others there!
