Hi, As someone who is new to Linux (even though I have been using PC's since DOS 2.1 on a 'then' modern machine) and I've been building my own machines since about MS/PC DOS 3.3. I've never worked in the IT industry. I used to write about using computers in conjunction with amateur (HAM) radio for Practical Wireless, but again, that was all DOS and Windows.
A few years ago I added Apple Mac's to my hobby and all but dumped Microsoft OS. However, I have now found Linux and am loving everything about the whole concept of what it stands for.
I have been reading the threads of this latest IRC meeting and feel I could benefit a grat deal from this. I don't think I could make it EVERY monday evening, or stay for the entire meeting. This is because I am the main carer for my severely disabled wife who has MS, so her needs come first. However, I would like to 'join in' even if it's only to listen and learn.
So, what is it? And, how do I join?
Best regards,
Peter

Right, IRC meetings don't necessarily tend to happen anymore, the IRC channel is busy most weekdays and evenings, so don't feel that you have to join every monday, you could just drop in every time you are free.

Right, to join take a look for the software xchat on your machine (i'm working on the basis that you are using evolution as your mail client) and try and follow the clickthrough menus, there is an email sent early on a Monday that includes the details you will need to fill in. Just try to get on #alug on irc.oftc.net or irc.alug.org.uk and we will be nice to you. If you can't do this then send another shout to the mailing list with the specific problem.

Some (me too!) don't like to IRC all the time, so generally connect on Monday evenings. If someone has a topic for a Monday evening, please send it to the list, or bring it along anyway.
(Basically, there are side-effects to being on IRC too much if you have lots of other things that you need to do.)

Yes, that would be helpful (emailing of topics to the list first), there does tend to be people lurking around on a Monday evening though, and I must point out that the first time you join don't expect a reply within seconds. I have seen people join and then say "hi" and quite 10 seconds later and spent less than 20 seconds in the channel. Although, recently Mondays do appear to have been the quietest days...

Aye, should we include a disclaimer in the reminder that "IRC may be damaging to your life and getting stuff done, please seek medical advice if you are of an addictive personality or have trouble balancing work and play"?
