To be sure, find it in http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html There is some slow progress on supporting dumb modems in Linux at http://linmodems.org/ but it's slow going when the manufacturers won't tell them hardly anything at all.

I can't afford a new branded modem at the moment (I thought about a US Robotics 56k external) but I know where I pick up an internal ISA one very cheaply. Has I understand it I should be able to use this with 'generic' settings. Can anybody throw anymore light on this for me please, or at least point me in the right direction ;¬)

If it's the internal sort with dipswitches on the back to set IRQs etc, then it should be no trouble at all. cat /proc/interrupts to see what's used already in you system and cross fingers, I think.

There was someone on uk.local.east-anglia offering the "alright" Diamond 56k external for around £30, I think.
