using Ubuntu 10.04 [also tried on my old machine on 8.04 and clean install on spare PC Xubuntu 10.04]
Does anyone shop online with Asda.
I've been using it for over a year now. End of Feb it started coming up with "our website is experiencing difficulties... please try again later". So i did... and got the same message every time i tried. I thought i'd made a breakthrough when instead of first 'booking a delivery slot', did the shopping (didn't get their message) and then after booking the slot back it came.
I telephone and filled out their online form and apparently the website is working fine.
It seems a] their website has been updated and doesn't like linux (which doesn't make sense using Firefox browser) b] Macintosh machines seem to get the same message
It would appear they've done something on the website so linux users have problems. Does anyone else shop online with Asda by any chance... any problems? Any suggestions from a geek what could be wrong or what i could suggest in my next letter?
thanks james

That given they aren't interested in supporting online purchases from anyone other than windows users, you will be using Tesco's in the future ?
Have you tried other browsers (Chrome ?)

Due to folk still placing orders it would seem that it only works for windoze users now. I can use Sainsbury's and Tesco's but i liked the Asda products better.
I've tried Chrome for the first time and got the same result.
thanks james

Begging them to fix it is probably futile. Try to get it working by messing with the user-agent in about:config (try appending MSIE codes?) and then write to them if you want.
If I were you, I'd switch to Waitrose.com (support the workers! and they price-match Tesco on lots of lines at the moment too) and flame ASDA on some websites. Consumer judo is the only thing large plcs should respect. http://mjr.towers.org.uk/blog/2006/boycotts
Good luck!
Try using the Firefox extension User Agent Switcher which can be configured to make badly written sites like Asda think that they're being addressed by any combination of Windows or Internet Explorer or any other OS or browser.

No it didn't work - i'll have to experiment a bit more. But i think i'll have to make do with Sainsbury's - can't stand Tesco.
thanks james

Shame about that. I guess Asda are using Windows specific features sucha as Active X or something like that. I wonder if people with Android devices have the same problem?

I don't know!
In the past i've found a well written letter actually goes far... Depends how it's written of course. I have only been critical of the IT staff; pointing out that Asda has the worst site of Tesco, Waitrose and Sainsbury's, and how they must be losing business if they restrict users to M$. Bury Tesco turnover £100k/week on online orders... i don't see how they make much money after the outlay for vans and staff - assume it is just on the sheer quantity.
I faxed the letter before lunch and actually had a phone call 1430 while i was out walking the dogs and the manager said he was going to make sure the matter was looked into seriously. [Yes i faxed!... i find faxing very useful although some say it's out of date - useful when a recipient doesn't have an email -- thought it was worth a mention as someone on this group was rather rude when i said i use fax for some letters in the past].
What annoys me is that the website used to work fine but doesn't now. It's not as good as the others but the produce i prefer.

I think I forgot to change the address to 'list' on my original reply: AFAICS the site works fine, using FF2 under Xan dross, and a more recent Iceweasel under Lenny.
But I didn't try to actually buy anything.
