The new SoundBlaster Live! driver works well on kernel 2.2.5-15 which came with RH6.0, however the midi is still conspicuous by its absence. :-( It's supposed to be there but I cannot get a .mid file to play. I expect I have to compile some support for midi in the kernel or something but to be honest I can't really be arsed as long as I can play mp3s while I'm working I'm happy. Still 4 speaker surround would have been nice and a release of the source would have been even nicer. I s'pose it's to be expected, brilliant sound card Creative Labs - shit manufacture support.
Mind you if anybody does know how to get midi working I'd be grateful...
Cheers,
BJ

Do you mean actual midi device support, or just playing .mid files? I tend to use timidity to play .mid files... there should be a package of it, but I seem to remember that the patch files are quite large.

I tried using the midi player that come with KDE, I think its called kmid, imaginative name eh? :-)
I think it's actual midi device support that isn't implemented. The device driver readme says that midi is supported but no .mid or .rmi file will play and I don't have a midi keyboard around at the moment to try the port out. Come to think of it I don't think the joystick works either. I might need to compile support for the midi/joystick port in the kernel? This shouldn't stop me playing a .mid though should it?
Funny how much you learn about stuff when it don't work init! Can't RTFM because I don't know which effing m to read! :-)

BJ

It probably is about time. Who was it said that they may be able to arrange for one in Cambridge?
Also, I think it would probably be a good idea if we can arrange network numbers and DNS names in advance. Would Paul mind being DNS registrar (as he's done that the last two meetings) or does someone else feel like taking on this responsibility? If we get that sorted out, we can hopefully get the network up and running that bit quicker.
MJR .sig missing, presumed dead.

Do any of you UEA types know anybody at the University or maybe we could aproach the Cambridge LUG for a venue?
If anybody needs a lift from the Diss/Stowmarket area let me know.

Even better, how about someone agrees to run a DHCP server?
Client-wise it makes life *much* easier -- I use DHCP at work, so when it comes to plugging it in to a DHCP-enabled network (e.g. I'm away at the IETF right now), I need make *no* changes to my configuration at all.
Paul.

Fine. First, can you point us at the best documentation for how to do this? Is the HOWTO the best guide? Secondly, how do we arrange the gateway? That has to have a fixed address, yes? Finally, what do we do with boxes like mine -- I want to use SLIP ;)

Not even to send email? Sorry, just a nitpick.

That was me, but I don't seem to be getting anywhere with my contacts at present, so if anyone else has any strings to pull, they'd better get heaving!
