Have scanner won't scan. We've been there before but not with Simple Scan. It knows my AGFA Snap Scan is there but says it's unable to connect. It is plugged in! I've tried gksudo simplescan (was that right?) and nothing happened. Is it another case of having to install VueScan?* And if it is, can someone kindly take me through how to install it? Many thanks.
Bev. (11.04.)
*That's what I had to do with my last computer to get it to work.

I have, in case anyone wonders, been through the lengthy thread I posted about this last time and have installed libsane-extras. Nada. I've googled and am not sure what option to go for so help gratefully received.
Bev.
If you fixed it last time by installing vuescan it's likely that installing vuescan again will fix it again.
I've got one too. I don't use Vuescan with mine. I use xsane. However, I think it's a simple beast, and doesn't have an on-board ROM. You need to configure it so that your PC downloads a ROM file to the scanner as it tries to connect. I think I explained how mine works last time you went through this, but you went the vuescsan route instead. I think the file is something like agfa1212.bin or something like that. I'm not in the position to check at the moment as pushed for time & computer problems of my own. I think Vuescan will work without this ROM, SimpleScan and XSane, won't.
Good luck!
Steve

Just checked back in the list. The file is SnapScan_1212U_2.bin Either install it as described, or try Vuescan like you did last time. However, I doubt that installing Vuescan will make Simplescan of XSane work; if you want to use them, you'll have to configure the scanner.

I've saved the instructions and the bin file (to the Desktop) but am stuck on changing directory. I've tried cd /Desktop/ and cd /desktop/ and it's not happy with either: cannot stat `/home/myname/Desktop/SnapScan_1212U_2.bin' no such file or directory
So I'm going wrong somewhere. Googling not that helpful right now.
VueScan (freebie trial version) does get it to work but it'd be great to just fire SimpleScan up without the hassle.
Assuming you're using Ubuntu and you can start a terminal window. (Pressing enter at the end of every line. Text in square brackets are comments, don't type them!
cd [changes to your home directory] cd Desktop [Changes to your Desktop directory] sudo mkdir -p /usr/share/sane/snapscan [ensures the destination directory exists] sudo cp SnapScan1212U_2.bin /usr/share/sane/snapscan [copies file]
sudo chown root:root /usr/share/sane/snapscan/SnapScan_1212U_2.bin [make sure the file is owned by the root user]
Edit config files as described in other thread. Assuming all edited and copies ok, try starting xsane from the terminal window by typing xsane, you'll see any error messages that come up.
Good luck. Steve

<snip> Well after a brief tussle (Terminal was saying it couldn't stat the .bin file when it could) I can report that this has finally, worked. Thank you for your patience Steve.

Before I say "Phew!!", just so I'm sure, is your scanner now working OK using either XSane or Simple Scan?

Just tested it using XSane (having tried Simple Scan yesterday) and that works too. Hoorah! :¬)
