thx 4 the help with the netwotking issue ppl. now you are going to hate me....! all i need working now is my USB. in mandrake 8.1 it is supported but i prefure mandrake 8.0 and it dose not seem to work. is there a way i could use the USB support from MDK 8.1 cd rom to alow my USB to work under MDK 8.0 i have got 2 linux books but they seem to hard to follow as they dont seem to cover what i want hardwhere wise.

I've had USB working on Mandrake 8 before (a Zip 250). I can't remember if I had to recompile the kernel (although I probably did anyway :). Have you tried the Mandrake hardware config tool (HardDrake?)? I suspect the USB modules for the kernel are available by default, it should just be a case of selecting a few options in the config tool.
If it doesn't work out of the box you'll probably need to recompile the kernel. All the stuff you need is under (unsurprisingly) USB Support in the config menu for the kernel. If you're trying to get a USB storage device working you'll also have to select SCSI emulation.
