Hello folks,
Some *very* interesting news here all the way from the USA :) SAMS publishing (who publish those meaty tomes on all sorts of computer-related stuff - I remember my SAMS HTML and CGI book with fond memories) have approached me with the offer of three free SAMS books as well as the opportunity for anybody here to become a technical editor or contributing author to their Linux series. As you can see below, there is quite some choice of titles they're working on :)
If anyone is interesting in the group obtaining these books - and perhaps would like to offer suggestions of what we're going to do with them when (and if) we get them, then take a look a www.mcp.com and we'll take a vote on the most popular titles mentioned. I'll then ask Don about getting them and we'll take things from there. If anybody has a better plan, just let me know :)
Anyway, on to the message:-

Hi Martyn,
I would like to send you 3 free Linux books for you to give away at your next meeting. Our web site is mcp.com. Please send me a list of books you would like.
Also, I am looking for technical editors and contributing authors for the following books: Linux Network Programming Unleashed SuSE System Administration Unleashed Linux Server Unleashed Linux Database Unleashed KDE Programming Unleashed GTK+ Programming Unleashed SAMBA Unleashed Python Unleashed Apache Server Unleashed SuSE Linux Unleashed TurboLinux Unleashed Linux Corba Programming Linux Game Programming Linux Protocols Handbook KDE Unleashed.
I pay $600 a chapter for writing, with most chapters being about 25 pages. The book will have a TOC, but the contributing author may make changes to their chapter TOC as they see fit. We will have 3 or 4 tech editors on each Unleashed book. The Unleashed book is 1,000+ pages of int/adv information. The technical editor is responsible for ensuring the technical accuracy of the book. They will read every page and make sure the text is technically correct. I pay $3 a page for technical editing. We will be working on the books mid-July - October/November.
Would anyone in your group be interested in tech editing or contributing chapters to these books?
We make all our Linux books available free on-line on our website bookshelf. Our Red Hat Linux 6 Unleashed, due in August, will be free on-line at the Red Hat site. I have a Linux advisor on staff that ensures that we are in sync with the needs and requirements of the Linux community.

I'd suggest: One of the Linux Unleashed (probably the general, if it's up to date) for reference at ALUG meetings
Linux Programming Unleashed One of the Teach Yourself Linux ...for some sort of competetion at meeting

Look Martyn! You missed this blatent invitation to tell us it was $500 a chapter and take a cut ;)
Regrettably, I'm not sure my sanity would take writing any more right now. Good luck to all of the talented wordsmiths who do contribute.
