Suddenly realised what to do with the discursive/nattery thing about the endless rambling conversations both here and on my blog due to suddenly having A Social Life for the first time in years. Because I know *exactly* how annoying it is to have someone who's likeable and sympathetic and *won't shut up", because by now I've been on enough lists where that's happened.
I should type into or clip into the LJ client, post it private, and squint and chop at it until it's slightly less overwhelming -- then e- mail it somewhere or blog it. It's a 'discipline problem', and the answer is achievable once I start lifting my fingers from the keyboard rather than posting 50 paragraphs at a time...

if you REALLY want to ramble, join us on our IRC server irc.alug.org.uk and the name of the room is #alug.
For OSX I recommend Colloquy (http://colloquy.info/)

Yes, I'd forgotten about that. Was going to ask when it's most likely to be 'live'? (I'm used to going to IRC and saying 'hello? anyone awake? no')

Cheers, got it already. Bit of a learning curve after running mIRC for n years: is Colloquy the leader on OS X the same way mIRC is in Windows?

Usually live during working hours - and then seems to pick up again around 8pm ish (after people have eaten) - but there's usually people around at odd hours (there's some dodgy student types hang around in there, they've got nothing better to do ;)
Cheers,

Yup, we're normally sitting in there anywhere from 8am->most of the day->till the wee hours.
Just pop in and say 'Anyone awake?' If they're asleep, a new person in the channel will probably have the effect of waking them up!

Ok I'm new to IRC so I dont know if I've get up Konversation correctly or not. I've got messages on the window saying:
[Info] Looking for server irc.alug.org.uk:6667.... [Info] Server found. connecting...
Do I need a login for this anywhere and if so where do I enter that information? Or is this all that's required and its just that there's no-one chatting?
Thx & Rgds

This shows you have connected to the network...
You will need to join the #alug channel or chatroom, with the command
/join #alug
Then you will appear and we will talk!

Hmmm, that's not working... Its now rolling the same error message over and over...
[Info] Connection to Server irc.alug.org.uk lsot: no error. Trying to reconnect
Is there perhaps a better IRC client I could use rather than Konversation?
Thx

/me uses ksirc
Though I don't know if its "better"
Try connecting to irc.oftc.net.
Also try specifying your nick:
/nick WhateverYoudLikeToBeKnownAs /join #alug
We await your presence...

Indeed. Perhaps it is best to avoid a "client" for now, we can always go back to one at a later date. For now, try this web-based one;
Fill in the boxes with the following information:
Nickname: somethingofyourchoice Server: irc.alug.org.uk Channel: #alug
then click Login and you should be in the chat room with us.
I'm thinking one of the reasons you're unable to connect to the chat server is because the traffic it runs on is being blocked by a firewall perhaps. If you still can't get in on the web-based one, go to http://www.ircatwork.com/advanced.html and change the port number to anything between 6668, 6669, 6670 or 7000. Perhaps traffic won't be blocked on those ports. We shall see..

Wow, I think it's working now, thanks Simon!
