At last Sundays meeting one of you I think it was Brett was running a window manager which had transparent windows.
What wm is it, where can I get it, how do I configure it to do that and do any other wms have this facility?
Also I tried to load Debian to no avail (major hassles trying to get the x server working), I think I still need some hand holding as yet so it's back to RH6 which works a treat on my system.
Cheers,
BJ

Brett was running IceWM with Gnome, I believe (see icewm.cjb.net), but the transparent windows come from eterm, I think (see www.eterm.org).

wterm which is a modified rxvt afaik also does transparency, I think that's more a WindowMaker thing. aterm, which is more afterstep. You can of course use whatever terminal windows you want with whatever WM you want. I use transparent eterm's with enlightenment which seems to work well, only thing is the machine needs some time to wake up after I change desktop background images. Find them all over at http://freshmeat.net/

Rite...yup...it probably was me ;) It was IceWM with Gnome, but the transparent terminal was an eterm (as someone...Mark?) has already pointed out...I find these the easiest to configure as its a quick have of one of the Eterm themes (/usr/share/Eterm/themes/Eterm) well...actually...its more copying the trans theme to Eterm and then hacking it to ur preferences :) I used Eterms in WindowMaker and Enlightenment before GNOME so I know that that works :)
Also, if ur interested in a transparent X-Chat window then X-Chat Gnome rocks...it uses the zxvt library (don't ask me ;) but is quite nice (if ur mad like me ;)
Also I tried to load Debian to no avail (major hassles trying to get the x server working), I think I still need some hand holding as yet so it's back to RH6 which works a treat on my system.
What X Server?
Hope that was of use ;)

Thanks everybody maybe I'll attempt that at the next meeting when I can get some help. That's if we are not trying to get a network running. :-)

This is not really a Linux problem, but it has come about because I want to install Linux, so I am hoping someone can provide some guidance.
I have just fitted a 8.4 GB hard disk and installed the dreaded Win98. This will no longer use my old browsers and insists that I sign up for MSNetwork before it will let me use the new Internet Explorer. Is there any way around this?
I can't download a later version of Netscape because I don't have a functional browser at the moment. Any ideas?

It is rather sad replying to your own posts, but I have solved it by installing Netscape Communicator.
