I mentioned this at the Forum on Thursday and people asked for more info. The new crop of EM8500 DVD players (the ones that are fairly cheap and support DivX) seem to be powered by Linux. Are we talking the same thing? {HA 441} LiteOn Multi-format DVD/MP3/WMA/DIVX/VCD/CDR/DVDR & RW/CD Player I would be supprised if they are Linux powered, they are so cheap and limited in function. Yes.

I don't think they're that limited. Looks like they do a reasonable job of playing DVDs and DivXs. Which is what you expect from a DVD player really. Not a lot different than using Linux for the TiVO; provides you with a base OS which you can then run an app on without the average person needing to care what's underneath.
