Today my desktop PC will change from a Microsoft Windows XP based one to a Linux (Fedora I think) one. Hurrah!
On the windows PC I always ran an X server which displayed my Solaris CDE desktop but now I can run a proper 'unix like' system directly on my work machine (like I used to in the more distant past when we all had Sun workstations).
Progress! :-)

*grin* - so I shouldn't mention that at work all of the workstations are NFS root PXE boot debian stable (with some backports) then, and that I've not had a windows desktop as a work machine since, err, 2001 I think - and that lasted all of 3 months before it got "magically" replaced by something that I found laying around that I threw Debian at...
But, congrats! A small victory indeed - now wait for the people that decide to send broken word documents and want you to get data out of it (antiword or wv2html are very useful at this point - if you just want data ;)
Now, if you're used to a CDE desktop, what window mangler are you going to use in Fedora? ;)
Cheers,

My desk workstation was a SunOs and then Solaris box from around 1989 until some time post 2000, I don't remember exactly when I pensioned off the Sparcstation which was still on my desk until yesterday. It's only been for a couple of years that I've had an XP PC on my desk.

I already do all this as I 'live' in my CDE desktop running mutt as my MUA, transferring to a wholly Linux box will just make life somewhat easier.

At home on my slackware system I use fvwm2, hopefully I'll be able to run that on my work system too.

I was running a Linux desktop at work back in 1998, and rather nicely administering a Windows NT domain from it thanks to VNC. I went purely Linux (i.e. didn't have a second little used Windows box) in 2000 when I moved jobs and have been that way ever since :) Although I have to confess that now I have my own business I do have a test Windows box since I have to support it - it was broken a year or so ago, I reinstalled last month and it still isn't running smoothly. It's a low priority though ;)
