Are you receiving bounce messages? If so, what do they say? If not, you have your sendmail wrongly configured as to origin server, relays or whatever.
Sebndmail the the grand-daddy of all mailers. It will do whatever you require - including cook the dinner, if you ask it nicely.

I currently get no bounces, so it must be configured incorrectly. Is thier a HOWTO anywhere in which it could help me configure it.

Look in the 'Linux Unleashed' series of books. You will find m4 config files there from which you can build your sendmail.cf. Here are a couple that I use:
divert(0)dnl VERSIONID(`@(#)generic-linux.mc 8.3 (Berkeley) 3/23/96') OSTYPE(linux)dnl DOMAIN(generic)dnl MAILER(local)dnl MAILER(smtp)dnl FEATURE(`use_cw_file')dnl
or a fancier one that supports multiple domains, filtering and virtual users:
divert(0)dnl VERSIONID(`@(#)generic-linux.mc 8.3 (Berkeley) 3/23/96') OSTYPE(linux)dnl DOMAIN(generic)dnl MAILER(local)dnl MAILER(smtp)dnl FEATURE(`virtusertable',`hash /etc/sendmail_virtusers')dnl FEATURE(`relay_based_on_MX')dnl FEATURE(`access_db')dnl

I'm not terribly up to date with sendmail (it's now one of the first bits to get replaced if possible... exim with eximconfig, or postfix are good choices), but it sounds like you haven't told sendmail where to send to. If you run the command "mailq" as root, you should see your emails, hopefully.
OK, to tell it where to send to, find the "smart relay" line in your sendmail config file (.cf or .m4, depending on which you use -- I think it's the DS line in the .cf file, but the m4 file may overwrite it if the system uses it) and add the name of your ISP's outgoing mail server. Then restart sendmail and the command "runq" hopefully will clear the backlog. If it does, then: congratulations, you have a spooling outgoing mail server!
