I now have a new to me machine. (Ubuntu 10.10, plus all updates.) On logging in I get an error message for the monitor to say (I think) that it's signal is out of range though it's fine once I'm in. However, oddly, I don't get to enter my password. This is, admittedly tricky when you've got a box right over the bit you need to type in but how do I sort these two things out? I hope this isn't a dumb question. I seem horribly good at those just now.

Is the mouse active at this point? If so, can you move the box out of the way to allow you to type? Can you login to a console by using Alt-whichever key?
Way back in September 2010, John Woodward was having a problem with a monitor so you might be able to look back at that, presumably you have another machine, and glean some ideas.

No, the mouse isn't active at that point but I'll take a look at John's thread though.

If I remember I ended up trying various different xorg.conf entries, trial and error until I had a working config which I then tweaked until I worked. It still isn't fully satisfactory, I have some ghosting on my screen on my Ubuntu 11.04 box using propitiatory Nvidia drivers connected to a KVM switch whereas Win 7 on identical machine and Fedora (with a diferent GFX card) both work fine. Cheers, BJ
