All,
I have finally got internet access under linux. The final fix was a play with the routing table and all works fine. This email is being sent from linux.
Thanks to all who helped me with this problem.

when I type route it displays the headings of the route table and

Use "route -n" to avoid doing DNS lookups?
where can I find displayed the settings for DNS and default
Gateway?
route tells you gateway settings and DNS names are in /etc/resolv.conf
I use peanut Linux.
I think that's based on an old Slackware?
Should... I intend to set up my own internal network and run ppp on demand with a firewall etc... but as yet can't get ppp working. so
at
the moment the network card isn't even connected to any cables.
So you almost certainly don't want a gateway on that network just yet. Can anyone who has done this recommend a good tutorial, as I don't fancy writing one ;-)
