Hi all,
Just read about these City College Norwich courses on page 16 of todays EDP,
"New courses designed to help you get the most out of your computer"
"Computer Systems Software
Using UNIX (LINUX) operating system"
"30 hour courses, Monday evenings or Saturday mornings, starting in February. These are North Anglia IT (NAIT) courses all at level 2."
"To find out more call us now on 01603 773109"
The advert also mentiosn 2 other courses including "specifying and setting up a stand alone computer system" and "computer hardware".

Charming coming from a college using only one linux box on their core network. Many people there dismissed Linux about 2 years ago saying that it will never catch on. Lack of applications etc. I have tried many times to prove there are applications but they just won't listen.

Kings Lynn collage was no better, a few people from my year did try to get them to install it and duel boot some of the machines, but i don't think anything happened =(. LOL come to think of it they wouldn't even upgrade to win2K at the time(2000-2002) one of the computing teachers had to setup and run his own lab for win2K. I guess it made IT Services life allot easier... but has it? They were plagued by viruses and people messing up the win98 box'en.

Typical. Come to think of it. They did had a slackware/window lab.. But in order to use slackware, you had to have the boot up disk. I managed to get it off one of the IT guys I know (who is still there) and played with it.
People looked at me funny when I was mucking around with some xterm, xeyes ;)
They will never learn.

I heard a fun story about this, but I'd rather not send it to the list. Ask me at a meeting.
A small update on this....
I just have been asking around City College via emails since I know some peeps up there.
The reply was:
"These are new courses and I am just testing the market at the moment which is why I haven't set a start date. I hope that Anne DeCogan will teach the Unix course but I haven't organised the other two yet."
Thought you guys would like to know.. probably useless information of the day... I'm on my second cup of tea of the day.......

Quite useful really, can you perhaps tell me who your contact is? or do you want to pass on some leaflets etc. about where to find Alug? My plan was to give them a call the course tutor and ask if they would/could pass on information about Alug, I believe MJR has some kind of leaflet although it could need updating IIRC.

Also Learn Direct have a couple of basic Linux courses available. I know that BattleNet are looking at offering these - my understanding is that you need to sign up in person but can actually do the course completely online from home if you want. I had a look at the course info and it seems fairly basic (the "Advanced" course covers user creation and things like that), but I guess it might be of interest to some people. Especially as I think they're free.
