I keep getting tabs opening up in Chrome with a URL of Adf.ly but can't find it in the list of extensions.
So I thought that if I search my machine for that string I might be able to find it and delete as I am irritated by the constant appearance. A search revealed that a Ghostery database file contained that string.
So if I want to stop Adf.ly being presented to me every time I run Chrome, should I simply delete appropriate section from the Ghostery database? Or is there a better way?

I don't know for sure, but I suspect it's in a ghostery data file because ghostery is aware of these links and tries to control them. I suspect that ghostery is not opening these links, and deleting them from ghostery might actually make things worse rather than better.
If they open by themselves when no other chrome tabs are open, then I suspect a plugin, toolbar or app installed in chrome. If they open when other chrome tabs are open, then it may be a popup opened by another web-page.
I'd suggest more research before hacking ghostery, which is usually (IMO) a good-guy.
