Er, oops :-) I have very little luck with modems (ongoing sagas) so it may be fried. I did only have the one brief attempt.
I'll try either a USB or PS2 mouse then to free the serial port, or see if I can easily get the usb-serial doobry. (Then I'll go and get another unfried modem......)

The last time I looked at USB/Serial converters they were pretty expensive. If you don't have a PS/2 port but do have a USB port it will probably be cheaper to get a USB mouse and put the modem on the real serial port.
