Hello Alug
I recently raised a query about archiving/exporting complete folders of emails from Thunderbird to a separate drive on my computer. Several people replied - thanks to all.
In particular 'James' said he copies emails like this all the time using the import/export add-on.
I had trouble getting the add-on to install when I tried it before, so closed down Zone Alarm & Avast while I tried to install it. I then received some info on how to install an alternative (SmartSave) and saw through this that I should be using the Tools/Add-ons menu which I wasn't familiar with. It's now installed and working fine, but I'd appreciate comments about ZA & Avast possibly being involved; and also any comments on SmartSave v Import/Export 1.6.1.
Thanks ac

Regarding addons for Thunderbird - perhaps i should have mentioned something as they are slightly different from FireFox addons/extensions. In Thunderbird you have to download them, and then install... whereas in FireFox you just directly install a .xpi.
SmartSave... so 'smart' it's xxxx. It seems to miss out loads of emails if you test it on a spare machine. Stay with ImportExport... have a look on the Mozilla forum - lots of folk say it's great and so do i!
Can't comment on recent versions of ZoneAlarm... i tried it year's ago and didn't like it.
Avast - i used and thought it was better than AVG. Updates are more frequent on the free version and resident scanning better. As for scanning emails - it's automatic if you're using the 100 and 25 ports but others you have to configure [which is most these days as SSL seems to be the norm]. Assuming it is a windows pc you're using it for i found manual scanning was better for email - for piece of mind. But now most providers have server scanning e.g. aol, gmail, yahoo, for certain and many others... it is not a worry these days. Any virus doesn't reach you.

If you have the Add-Ons dialogue open, you can drag URLs into it from (eg) Firefox. That cuts the steps down a little.

Always hated it.
We recommend/use Comodo Firewall (another free one but we find it better, and it doesn't keep trying to sell you an upgrade). Of-course it won't run on (and isn't needed by) the sort of desktops we're all running here...
