4.2 Jellybean and I can’t record any sound on my phone. The app (one that came with the phone) looks as though it works but all I get from the speaker is white noise which is a shame as there have been some fabulously noisy birds tweeting away recently (pre migration, I assume.) I have tried switching it off and on again. Any ideas? A google doesn't seem to bring up any useful advice.

Switching it off and on again may not be doing what you think. My phones come with "Fast boot" enabled (or something like that). In that mode, when the phone switches "off", it isn't switching off, it's actually going into suspend mode. This may be the case and it may just be that the sound record system has crashed and won't work and "off and on again" won't cure it. It's a long shot! On my phone, you can disable "fast boot". Alternatively, a long press on the power button brings up a "shutdown" menu where one of the options is "reboot", which may clear a problem. I've got an HTC.
It's a long shot I'm afraid. Otherwise, things to consider are Asking manufacturer for help (esp if the phone's new) Turning off and removing the battery for a few minutes then switching on again. Uninstalling and reinstalling the sound recorder app. Installing a different sound recorder app and/or player app to test if it's the app or hardware that's not working. Checking all your settings for recording & playback.
Good luck!
