Greetings all! Anyone out there who banks with Barclays and is having problems accessing Online Banking with Linux?
I last logged in 6 days ago with no problems. Today, when I try to access it, no login page comes up -- it just hangs forever. So I can't even try to get started!
I'm using (an admittedly slightly elderly) Iceweasel 2.0.0.19 of 2006 on a Debian Etch 2.6.18 last updated Feb 2010.
Any suggestions most welcome! Best wishes to all, Ted.

As for suggestions, maybe update your setup? Or better yet, change you bank......

I just tried again on another machine which has Iceweasel 3.0.6 (2010) on a Debian 2.6.26 of Nov 2010. Still the same problem.
Given that I had no problems at all up to 6 days ago, presumably Barclays have changed something.
Might it be a Java problem in my browser?
Ted.

Dunno. Does Barclays Online Banking use Java at all? It looks like a bit of a car crash in a web widget factory to me, but looks more like a web app than a Java app.
http://www.barclays.co.uk/Helpsupport/Upgradeyourwebbrowser/P1242580160252 suggests that Barclays require Firefox 3.6 or higher, so your 3.0.6 is probably too old. If you want later versions of Iceweasel on Debian stable, see http://mozilla.debian.net/ for download instructions.
ObPlug: leave Barclays, the lying swines. http://www.morningstaronline.co.uk/news/content/view/full/120796 Bank on something better: http://www.MoveYourMoney.org.uk/
Hope that helps,

Thanks for those comments. Potentially useful! (By the way, while I have sympathy with comments about Barclays, it is nonetheless the only bank with a branch within 10 miles of where I live, so I do keep an account there).
I have found that when, instead of Iceweasel, I open the Epiphany web-browser which is installed in the Gnome taskbar by default in my Debian, I can indeed connect to Barclays without difficulty,
However, when I finish the first stage (name & security number) of logging in, and click to move on to the next stage (letters from password), I immediately get the following pop-up:
Connect to untrusted site? It was not possible to automatically trust "*.tt.omtrdc.net". It is possible that someone is intercepting your communication to obtain your confidential information.
You should only connect to the site if you are certain you are connected to "*.tt.omtrdc.net".
When I click on "View Certificate" in this pop-up, I see:
Could not verify this certificate because the issuer is unknown. Issued To Common Name: *.tt.omtrdc.net Organisation: Adobe Systems Incorporated Organisational Unit: Omniture BU
Issued By Common Name: DigiCert High Assurance CA-3 Organisation: DigiCert Inc Organisational Unit: www.digicert.com
[blah blah]
So here (for the time being) I halt. While DigiCert (according to their website) give the appearance of respectability, I wonder why attempting to log in to Barclays links to a certificate they have apparently issued to Adobe. How come Barclays link to Adobe, specifically to Omniture (part of Adobe) whose function (according to www.omniture.com ) is an online-martketing data-sollection setup?
The last thing I want while entering my security info into the Barclays login is for any of this to get anywhere near any external organisation (let alone a marketing setup).
Or might this be something thrown up by Epiphany itself (I doubt it, since it hasn't happened for other sites I have visited using Epiphany).
Or, in fact, is the whole thing really harmless, and my reaction perhaps paranoid?
Informed comments welcome!
With thanks, Ted.

http://www.omniture.com/press/381 explains it far better than I could.

Maybe it was something to do with Epiphany on that particular machine.
I just tried again with Epiphany on a different Debian machine, and did not encounter that "Certificate" issue at all.
Still puzzled, because I have hardly ever used Epiphany (only a few times in the past, out of curiosity; recently, only as an experiment for site, like Barclays, which have hung when I try to access them from Iceweasel).
Hmmm ... Ted.
