It could be worth running alsaconf (with no sound apps running) and trying again. I have to do that on a Debian Etch before anything will play! I think that's because the default is OSS (but I've forgotten the original details). Also, try to find out (from your sound-player apps) what sound device they try to send to. Usually there is an option (access route depending on the app) where you can check.change this. Just shots in the dark ...
