I'm still trying to decide what all-in-one printer (if any) suits our needs best. I've narrowed down to a shortlist of:- Brother MFC5840CN or MFC3440CN - Linux drivers soon, ethernet and USB Canon MP780 - No Linux drivers, USB HP 7310 or 6110 - No Linux drivers, but PCL3. USB and ethernet. Lexmark X7170 - Win2k and XP only Dell 962 - Dell badged Lexmark X7170
The Dell 962 is unbelievably cheap at the moment (£83 or so) and is basically a Lexmark X7170 with a few cosmetic changes. The Canon also looks good. The HPs are good but not perfect, the Windows drivers use more than 250MB and I've seen reports of problems with them.
I *might* thus decide to go for a Windows only printer which raises a question:-
Can I connect a printer with a USB interface to my Linux box and share it with Samba so that my Win2k systems can use it even though it doesn't have Linux drivers.
If I can do this then the Dell 962 and Canon MP780 are possible but, if not, then I think Brother is the front runner.

We have a Brother HL-5170DN and it's perfect.
It has a duplexer; attaches to the network and is easily used from linux and from windows
I recommend it heartily

I've been very please with my HP PSC (PCS?) 1205.
Installation on SuSE 9.2 went without a hitch, and there's now even a utility for checking ink levels, aligning cartridges etc. I can print to it from anywhere on my network using CUPS.
Xsane works out of the box.

IMHO Lexmark are crap, and the replacement carts routinely cost far more than the printer. Out of that lot I would investigate the HP and Brother in depth.

To be honest I have found HP to be very costly on ink as well and tends to waste a lot of ink with combined colour cartridges. Though have any of their printers colour seperated carts? These may help:

I found so many reviews. I choose the Epson RX420 because it was rated as a good linux, economical, space saving, high spec, and lastly cheap option :) I am awaiting delivery for the item, Good luck.

Thanks for the pointer to the Tom's Hardware site, I used to use it many moons ago but hadn't though of looking there for printer information.
The major issues with Epson all-in-ones for me are:- No Automatic Document Feeder for copying multiple sheets, this is one of the things I really want that I don't have at present.
No Fax, I'd have to keep my Brother thermal paper fax and so the space saving of an all-in-one is rather lost.
Having said that the Epson RX500 and RX600 are attractive as they would replace my current scanner as well as the HP printer because thay have a slide and negative scanner.

I can't see any support for the RX420 (or any other all-in-one for that matter) on the Epson site, are there third party Linux drivers for the Epson RX series all-in-one printers?

Ah, thanks, I wonder why there isn't a link to there from the Epson UK site (not an obvious one anyway). That means the Epson RX500/600 can stay on my list.

Many Epson printers have/had combined carts and those links are for older generation HP machines, none of which are on the OPs short list. My experience of Lexmark has been that the printers produce awful quality prints, have poor (no?) Linux support and are /very/ expensive to get new carts for.

The choice is yours my friend, but remember Epson printers do have support under Linux. Within Ubuntu alone this is evident and within the link I have given. Reading through the numerous links Epson and Canon came out on top for economy over HP, but I am sure you can make your own informed choice :) I must agree Lexmark are crap, stay away. Serviced many types of printers and these are the worst! Seems Dell has gone for the cheap root rather than the quality root, shame.

From my experiences with inkjets they really aren't worth the bother anymore unless you *need* colour printing. I have given up on my (Epson photo 900) inkjet and it now gets the cheapest compatible carts due to how it ate vast amounts of expensive ink and would clog the nozzles on a regular basis which would require dozens of nozzle cleaning attempts (and using more precious ink) to clear the think, this was also the same with my old Epson (fwiw Epson printers have the print head built into the printer, if it gets clogged you can't replace it) but my parents HP (which had been icky) at least has the print head built into the print carts.
The reason I said to go with either the HP or Brother from the posted list of choices was because they should both work with Linux :)
I also recently took the decision to get photos printed from an online lab as they can do much higher quality prints than I can with less hassle and probably around the same cost and that if I need to print something in colour I will just take it to the local print bureau who have decent printers and don't charge very much at all. Oh, and I have a Samsung ML-1510 laser for cheap copies which I can refill the toner carts for not much at all :)
