Ubuntu had a bunch of applets too of course but amongst them was one that enabled you to copy and paste fractions, copyright symbols, accents (French, Spanish, etc). Very useful. There doesn't appear to be anything similar for Mint, though. Ideas?

I just tend to google the characters & copy/paste them; it's quicker than searching through Accessories|Character Map, providing you can remember what the doohickey you're after is called!
Hi Bev,
You can use [AltGr] plus various alpha-numeric keys to produce lots of useful characters. The problem is remembering them. I have friends in France and use é ô è quite a lot so I remember those. Also € ½ Ø (for diameter) and ° (degrees). I've made a crib sheet for the others I use occasionally, do you want a copy?

I really am after the character applet. If it's possible to apt-get it onto this system then I'd be delighted to know how.
