Processor: Athlon 1.3Ghz RAM: 256Mb Motherboard: Gigabyte something or other with 686? chipset (I'll check tonight). It has a promise raid/ATA100 controller chip on it (which is supported by the kernel). I've tried the CDRW on this and the main ide channels. Hard disk is 16Gb which does ATA33 I think but don't know what make as I've not looked for a while (because it's worked fine for ages).

Several more plays yesterday showed that simulations always seem to work OK. Writing seems to stop at random points through the process and I get a message which includes something about media being bad? (I'll grab the logs tonight). I've been using cheap CD's that I've had for a while so maybe they are dodgy, I also tried a different brand which didn't work although they aren't a known brand either. I'm going to get some better CD's today and give them a go. I managed to write a whole CD yesterday after I swapped the drives around on the IDE channels and turned on the always use DMA setting in my kernel. Although it wasn't the first attempt with the new settings. I've coming to the conclusion that it's my media that's crap. After I wrote a cd (or some of a cd) I looked at the cd under the light and I couldn't see the difference between it and a new, blank one. I'm sure you can usually see the track!

I did discover that I had more luck when using Kreatecd rather than xcdroast but I don't understand why as they both use cdrecord under the hood.

An interesting thing that I've discoverd about my drive is that it appears to stop writing and change speed at about 25% and 50%. Seems to be OK doing that though, guesss the burn proof is working OK.

Anyway, I've got a few more things to try (media, different OS, different computer) and we'll see.
