My sister-in-law is using Mandrake 9.0 and has just bought an Epson Stylus C44 which I have duly installed using the Mandrake Control Centre (or whatever they call it). It detected it correctly and it shows up in the KDE Control Centre correctly.
It will not, however, print. No error messages in the CUPS logs and in the CUPS Management thingy the job just sits there in the queue although it lists the Epson C44 as idle and waiting for jobs.
I even tried cat file.txt > /dev/usb/lp0 which also produced nothing.
Any ideas, anyone, please!

I can't answer the specific problem but here are some suggestions:
1. Have you updated all packages? There are frequent bug fixes as well as security updates. Always the first thing to do after an install :-)
2. In a similar vein, there were a lot of fixes between 9.0 and 9.1 - first thing I would do would be to upgrade the mandrake installation. I have the 3-CD download edition if you want to contact me off-list. The d/l version is 100% free s/w so there are no licence problems associated with copying and distributing them.
3. In keeping with the mandrake philosophy, the forums on Mandrake Club http://www.mandrakeclub.com have a free non-members area. If updating the installation does not help then you might like to ask there. The mandrake support community is one of its greatest resources.
4. I know this sounds a bit windows-like, but you could try doing an upgrade install as this may be more successful in recognising and configuring the printer. I have done this a couple of times with changed hardware. It takes only a few minutes and some presses of the return key. Of course the complete upgrade to 9.1 is still preferable.

No I haven't actually.

What's that?
An interesting point - I also installed Mandrake, from the same discs, for a friend of mine. He also has a USB printer which is not recognised as being connected although it is, apparently, supported.
I shall, however, do what you suggest and upgrade both systems to 9.1. I know that my brother has 9.1 discs from a Linux magazine so I may try that otherwise I may, as you suggest, contact you off list regarding the discs that you have.
Thanks for your help Sid.

When you boot and start the installer you have the choice of 'install' or 'upgrade' - the 'upgrade' option will sometimes do a better job of detecting new hardware and installing whatever packages are required than happens if you use the Mandrake Control Centre and, since very little is being installed, it is a very quick process.
Hope that is a more useful reply :-)
