Not really sure what's up. A couple of times my laptop has frozen. Either the program won't respond or won't launch. I've had to do a fsck check each time to get back in or I'd be stuck in initramfs, unable to log in again. (My phone had not packed up so I was able to google this info.) Anyone got any ideas?
Bev. (Cinnamon Mint 19.1 with all updates.)

I've had a couple of times when Firefox has hogged the processor so effectively that it felt like the whole thing had hung and in one case I too had to use the power button to turn off and reset everything.
Do you run Firefox? It's Javascript from rubbish websites that causes the problem in my experience.

I do. But it was, by and large, OK till short time ago. My hunch is an update has caused a few issues because it's never been quite this bad. I mean I could use the off button but log in again afterwards. Here, I do the same but I end up in initramfs.
But which update? That's the question. How best to check?

Yes it's usually the browser and sometimes a recently installed brower plugin.
If you wait the Out of Memory Killer (OOM) should kill it.
There are also some key sequences which may help (But not all distros have these enabled).

Alt+SysRq+s will Sync

Although how long does OOM take to kick in, typically?

Too long to be of practical use on a desktop!
