From alt.os.linux.mandrake:
Exactly the same problems here. Then I used the rpm on the December Linux Format DVD version (media/drivers/) subdirectory.
nvidia-kernel-2.6.8.1-10mdk-6111-1mdk.i586.rpm
instant success.
There is one dependency. Can't rember whether it was dkms-nvidia-6111-1mdk.i586.rpm or nvidia-6111-3mdk.i586.rpm
either way both are in the /media/drivers/subdirectory so urpmi nvidia-kernel-2.6.8.1-10mdk-6111-1mdk.i586.rpm will sort it

I did an "upgrade" from Community to Official and after a reboot I was left with a command prompt and no X. The reason for this as far as I could tell was the fact that Community was running kernel 2.6.8.1-10 and Official was running kernel 2.6.8.1-12. The installed nvidia-kernel driver (rpm) was for a different kernel.
So I assumed that the rpm file for the earlier kernel would not work with the newer kernel. Now I am totally baffled, I was beginning to think that I was starting to properly understand how Linux works and now I feel like a right daft plonker! (standing in corner with a "D" cap on!)
