The London Linux Expo is next week, Wednesday and Thursday, probably http://www.linuxexpo.co.uk/ or similar. Previous years, ALUG people have met up around lunchtime for a (not so) swift drink in the pub over the road.
Can I suggest that we continue the tradition and meet up at 1pm on the Thursday by the Association For Free Software and Debian stands? (If someone wants to arrange a Wednesday meet-up, feel free, but I can't as I'm not there...)

My last chance to email before Wednesday so unless I hear otherwise this evening I'll be around the Debian stand at about 1pm.

Looks as if I'll be there on Wednesday too, assuming my entry tickets et al arrive in time. It'll be nice to remake some acquaintances...
Cheers, Laurie.

Well, they didn't arrive, and I couldn't go anyway. Will be there on Thursday instead.
Cheers, Laurie.

Thanks to the vagaries of the privatised railway system I did not arrive untill nearly 3pm!!! Sorry to have missed you all. Still I did pick up a Woody DVD at the Debian stand.

(or heckle) ;) (well actually M$ are going to be there for that purpose)
I should be there on the wednesday although i havn't told work yet, but they will understand, (at least they will as i logon to on of the big fileservers and sit there with a rm -rf / just a CR away from destruction) hopefully.
I was looking on the expo website and it does appear to have bugger all information, are there going to be any additional talks by kernel hackers for instance?

Ian
Tell you what, you walk up to the Debian stand shouting GULA GULA......
We'll all watch and see how you get on....we may even have a collection to bail you out afterwards :o)

I might just do that.

Evening all,
I've just joined the list and I seem to remember the welcome message thingy asking me to give a little introduction to myself, so...
OK, I've been using linux for about 4 months now, slowly moving across from Gates evil OS. Just need to experiment with CD ripping/burning (which I haven't had time to play with yet) and DVD movies (can get ogle working but it's a bit jerky. Again, I haven't played much yet) then I'll be free (well apart from games...). I'm a programmer by trade, if you can call COBOL programming ;)
erm...Is that enough of an introduction?? Oh yeah, my name is Ben BTW...
Anyway...
I've been having a bit of trouble getting the sound working nicely under SuSE 8.0. My machine beeps at me, makes whooshing noises when KDE starts up and XMMS works fine. Unfortunately, I can't get any sound to word when playing CDs. gtcd will recognise a CD and bring up the artist/title info but pressing play doesn't do anything. KsCD works a bit better. 'play' works, the disc spins, the counter starts erm... counting but no sound. Basically, the sound is being piped through the 5mm socket on the front of the drive rather than through the soundcard.
Don't suppose anyone knows how to fix this please? (a friend says he knows what to do for windows, but that's no help is it...)
cheers,
Ben

Things to check: - do you know that the CD is connected to the sound system by a cable internally (ie, has it ever worked?) - has the KDE sound system got your soundcard exclusively? If so, you need to either stop it, or make the CD player use it. I know how to do that for esd (with esddsp) but I don't know arts... anyone?

Er, no. Debian is a voluntary organization without lots of money to throw away on free CDs for people. Come and buy a set and support Free software.

Apologies. I normally write that as Free to discriminate. :)

Looks like we'll be doing double sided DVDs this year, with both binary & source on it, which is pretty cool, as well as CD sets.
For anyone going who doesn't know what I look like I'm not easy to miss - 6ft, long red hair and a goatee. Seeya at the Debian stand. :)
