Hello!
From April, VAT returns have to be submitted using various HMRC
approved software, at a cost to the business. Does anybody in ALUG have the same problem as me, of finding appropriate software that can be used with linux, at minimum cost?
Thanks,
Jenny
According to HMRC website https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/va t-returns-and-ec-sales-list-commercial-software-suppliers/vat- commercial-software-suppliers
"You can submit your main VAT Return using the HMRC free online product: Online tax return - Value Added Tax. HMRC has tested al l the features of this service, and will provide support to users through the https://www.gov.uk/hmrc-online-services-helpdesk."
I don't do VAT, but have used the HMRC website for Income Tax for years. I hope they don't start requiring an app for that.

Hi Phil,
This service is what I've always used, but from 1st April 2019 returns have to be submitted using other software.
Thanks, Jenny
Or I suppose you could use an online accounting package like Quickbooks, it's not free in either sense you pay a monthly sub but can access it via any browser.

I use QuickBooks Online, and my account charges me under a tenner a month for access to it. It does the electronic VAT thing already.
Cheers, Laurie.

Thanks folks. I suppose QuickBooks would replace my spreadsheet altogether? I'd hoped just to have a platform to type in the VAT figures every quarter.
