I'll start by giving you a resume of my computer in case it has a bearing on the trouble I am having with Caldera OpenLinux 2.2.

Computer: Packard Bell Executive 200MHz (Upgrade - CenterHauls x86 Family 5 Model 4 Stepping 1 200MHz MMX), S3 (I think) 1Mb Graphic Card, 48Mb Physical Memory, American Megatrends Bios, version 100.05CP0R, dated 4/15/96, 4.3 Gb Hard Drive partitioned by FDisk into 2 equal size partitions - C and D, FAT16.

Have no trouble with installing Linux, just rebooting it. Tried several times with PartitionMagic on Linux disk with no success and couldn't partition on D as I wanted, so bought on-line System Commander 2000, it too has, so far, been unsuccessful but there are signs (encouraging?). I was able to partition D, it said Linux is bootable, which it still isn't and also said that I must be sure to select Root Superblock choice - I would, but have no idea where this is located.

In both cases, with PartitionMagic and System Commander, when I try to reboot Linux, it goes to the first OpenLinux page that I first saw when I installed it, with Boot at the top and (sometimes) a second line, but the next thing ALWAYS happens! It boots back to the opening Bios first-page. What am I doing wrong or is some part of my equipment not compatible with Linux? If you need other info, let me know, and I will do my best to supply it.

IIRC, Adam kindly volunteered to host one of the later ALUGs in North Norfolk - he said around ALUG28 or so. Since we didn't have any other venues that we hadn't already visited many times, we decided to hold ALUG28 after ALUG5.

I suspect ALUG6 will be after ALUG28. Almost as confusing as Sun's OS numbers...

Hi all

I've got a RH6.1 box working to masquerade (using ipchains) my dialup connection to my network... everything seems to work fine on both it and the Windoze boxes connected. The server has no keyboard/monitor and is usually up 24h.

I usually use a download manager - GetRight or GoZilla - on my Windoze box to download files. Its nice because if my connection goes down or the server goes down it will automatically retry and resume any files. It intercepts clicks from Netscape/IE and adds the URL to its list.

What I'd like to do is have a download manager on the linux box so that I can take down the 'client' machines and have the linux box continue to download files into the night...

What software is around that will do this for me? How could I make it easiest to get a URL from Netscape on a Windoze box to the download manager on the linux box?

Is there some kind of FTP/HTTP proxy server that will act as a download manager for certain types of files (e.g. zip/gz/tar/mp3 etc) but pass through files that don't match that filter (so I can browse the web/FTP sites quickly)?

Suggestions most appreciated

You could write one in perl fairly easily. See the HTTP::Daemon module in libwww. If you give me a few days, I can probably come up with something for you, let me know.

You could possibly use wwwoffle for this, but I don't know if it bends into quite the shape you're wanting. The intr-download-* options should do most of it (ie start the download, then cancel and let the cache continue it). http://www.gedanken.demon.co.uk/wwwoffle/
