Its for PowerPC only and based on Redhat... and as you know I am a Debian user... I don't know which is worse though, owning a Mac or running Redhat.. ;)

Leave off the mac users! =P I run OS X at work and it is a sweet little OS to play around. Plus the desktop is just standard where it isn't in the Linux environment.
Though, everyone is entitled to their own opinion anyway ;)

heh, there are plenty of standards for linux window managers... choice is good :) recent pet hates with OS X are a. not including/supporting X11 in the default install so having to install it by hand... and b. is the stupid automagic network configuration system that you can't turn off which refuses to resolve anything that may be called .local in the DNS as they hardcoded it in, which i know is causing problems for more than just me on this list :)
anyhow any computer that ships with only one mouse button is trouble if you ask me... ;)

Plently of window managers is probably a good thing but at the end of the day, newbies are gonna get confused ;)
a) X11? Install XDarwin instead. b) Er.. no problems here?

Heh, well get another usb mouse and plug it in. ;)

Yes, we've come across that .local problem at work too. It won't get fixed until the next release of OS X. It doesn't even work in Jaguar for Goodness sake! You know, I'm beginning to see Steve Jobs as being next Bill Gates but in the visual effects industry. He is CEO of Pixar, which produces award-winning computer animated films as well as the Renderman rendering system used widely in loads of visual effects studios. He is also, of course, CEO of Apple which now owns the high-end Shake and Rayz compositing software. He's introducing huge discounts on the Mac OS X versions of these software against the Windows (of which the Shake development for Windows is being stopped) and Linux. Renderman is still the industry standard rendering software (the only competition was Entropy which was formed by ex-Pixar employees and has had a law-suit filed against it for potential breach of copyright of the Renderman software, IIRC - the result of which is they can't develop any new versions of Entropy).
And I thought the ISP industry was tough..

Martyn

Apple have always played this game imho. It seems that they give you just enough at each release so you don't move elsewhere. The fact that they charged around £80 for an incrementally upgrade takes the piss!
Check out http://www.apple.com/macosx/ to see what you get. The strongest sell appears to be on iChat. It's instant messaging in bubbles. Yippee :( I have been a long supporter of Macs, but I just not seem to get excited by it anymore.
Time to learn more about Linux :)
