media players for bbc downloads Was: finally BBC iplayer linux
Just to check with people in the list: what is the video quality that you get when downloading with get_iplayer and playing it with you favourite media player? I've tested the stock mplayer and vlc that come with ubuntu, and my feeling is that vlc gives me a better quality image than mplayer. I just tried installing it on my eeepc and the interface is too big to fit on the screen. I've ended up installing get_iplayer instead, it's interface fits on one line :-)

As long as there's a High Quality Flash (flashhigh) version available for download, the resultant .mp4 files play at close to VHS quality for me in Kaffeine (Xine back-end) which I find is good enough. The ITV Player .asf files are noticably worse in comparison, though. Still, beats having to watch them with ads in ... Peter.

How are you getting those ? Is there a get_iplayer like thing for them ? I had a brief play with the ITV player site including installing Moonlight to try and get it working..even after getting Moonlight up and running it was still demanding silverlight so I gave up.

haha yeah, it's called get_iplayer (v1.13 onwards) ... :) Just add the parameter "--type=itv" to specify ITV Player programmes instead of BBC iPlayer. It works in pretty much the same way. Peter.
