I'm wanting to use a Linux machine (just Ubuntu) for my "main" machine to handle my business calls and contacts. The trouble is, there doesn't seem to be a Linux alternative to Outlook - which I use for Calendar and Contacts at the mo.
Evolution just seems to be a replacement for Outlook Express, not Outlook.
Have I missed something?

What specific Outlook features are you finding missing from Evolution ?..It does Contacts Tasks and Calendars (the Calendar also integrates nicely with the Gnome desktops clock)
IMO it is not *as* good as Outlook but I just know several people on the list would disagree. It will even talk to Exchange should you wish it too.

Oh, no. We've had this discussion before. I'll acknowledge it might be a fine program, running stand-alone but the Connector plugin into Exchange is *awful* to use. Even when I managed to get it running consistently (tho, extremely slowly), it seemed to delight in holding on to all the appointment reminders and then giving them all in a row, long after the meeting had started. *shiver*
If you have to use Exchange, far better to just put up with the web interface (or run outlook under a VM).

or wine..however at the moment on versions >= 2002 search seems to be broken...Everything else is fine though, offline mode etc all work. Even the Exchange over https connector works which is great as it saves me having to muck about joining the VPN
I find the web access thing a bit horrible in reduced functionality mode as you get in non IE browsers

I expect it depends on what your priorities are. I know that Evolution as provided on SuSE is supposed to be quite decent - I'm not sure whether it's an up-to-date version on ubuntu or even the same, because I don't use Evolution.
If getting the features supported of windows app x is a critical work thing, buy Crossover Office Professional and use a supported Outlook version.
You get to install and use app x quickly and easily, as well as put a small amount of money directly into the wine project and fund its development.

Be warned though that last time I checked you still get the search bug I mentioned even when using crossover
