I just installed Mandrake 6.1 off the latest PC Answers coverdisk. All went well, couldn't tell the difference between that and RH6.0's installer (apart from the total lack of X server setup, expect you're meant to do that after you have a working console).
When I get to the standard logon prompt I input root and enter as usual but it doesn't give me a password prompt just another logon prompt, hence I can't get into the system. This is also the case with a normal user and when I try booting from a floppy instead of the hdd (lilo is on the mbr). I can get into a bash prompt by using lilo single but that still gets me nowhere, I tried changing the root password and running lilo again from there.
Any ideas? Could the good folks at PC Answers have slipped us a lemon I wonder?

I picked up a copy of PC Answers myself today, purely for the copy of Mandrake (didn't fancy downloading it at 128kbit).
In short, they seem to have messed up the install/packages in some way.. haven't looked properly yet, but the end result doesn't work. According to some newsgroup postings, it isn't just the login that's messed up; X has problems as well, so it's probably not worth persevering.
Bit of a waste of a fiver really.

I bought Mandrake from PC World, and had no problems with it, The install was just like RH6, and I've had no problems with it, in fact it's running on a PC by my foot as a gateway/firewall :-)
Not a magazine I would normally buy either. I want my fiver back sob!...
I just checked out this group on their server nntp//:futurenet.com.pcanswers.cdandsoftware and there are a lot of angry people out there. Looks like they are going to try and post some sort of fix but me thinks they are going to be replacing a lot of duff CDs, that'll cost em! The words cockup and complete spring immediately to mind for some reason. :-)
Anybody out there in mega fast connection land fancy grabbing an iso image and burning a disk for me?

I had the same problem thought it was me being a Linux newbie and went back to Redhat 6.1 but if PC Answers cocked up they should replace the CD-ROMS

I dont know if this works because I havnt tried it yet but it could be worth a try

Thought about doing that but apparently some of the rpms are corrupt so I'll give it a miss until they get their act together.
I do wonder if I'm entitled to a refund or at least a working disk.

Could be interesting to see how many people do send the disc back to get a working one - should give some measurement to Linux interest in the UK.
