Are there any plans for any "kit meets" this year ?
Peter
Hi all, I will endeavour to organise one at Syleham but not for a while as I have only just come out of hospital again. I'll see what I can do about getting the hall for the latter part of April. Post any preferences here for 23rd or 30th.
Cheers, BJ

I prefer 30th. I hope you recover well.

I definitely can't make the 30th, but I'm not entirely sure I can make the 23rd at present either. :)

Well a feeble vote for 30th from me, if I come (which is only a vage possibility) it has the be the 30th.

Same here...no way I can make the 23rd but the 30th may be a go...no promises but I will make a real effort (if not only because there are a few reservations on the Library)
If I do come is anybody (who hasn't got the patience or hardware to get it running properly themselves) interested in a demo of XGL and Compiz ?
My machine is running it quite smoothly now..but it's a lot of kit to lug down if nobody is particularly interested.

I saw XGL at Peterborough LUG, I think. What's Compiz?

XGL in itself an OpenGL layer for X. On it's own it does nothing that looks new (although it will make an xserver faster if you have hardware acceleration)
Compiz is a composition/window manager and it's that bit that generates all the fancy effects you can see (well more accurately plug-ins for compiz) in screenshots all over the web...it just needs Xgl to do it.

Yes please. I do have hardware capable of running it, but I'm a bit reluctant to "break" my current working setup until I've actually seen it working to decide if it really is anything other than "3D eye candy".

I found that if you are already running a very recent build of x.org and you already have working 3D acceleration then the rest of the changes are easily reversible.
The way I have mine set up compiz and xgl are only enabled if I select a new session I created from the GDM menu..If I select my old session (which hasn't been modified) then everything is back to how it was.
I ended up upgrading to Ubuntu Dapper to get the dependencies up to a good level (which of course can cause breakage of it's own because Dapper isn't completely stable yet) but naturally in SuSE 10 it should be possible to have it working without too much trouble.
It seems from the Ubuntu Forums that any of the following (or a combination thereof) will cause slightly more grief.
64bit distribution ATI graphics cards (there's a surprise) Dual head
if it really is anything other than "3D eye candy".
Erm, I'll get back to you on that...the Expose style switcher is a good plus for usability in my opinion and I could see how the transparency could be useful (although you need an additional transet package to make it really useful) but no...pretty much everything else is eye candy :-)

I've got modular Gentoo 2006.0xorg 7.0 on my Mini-ITX boxen, but I'de be looking to try this on the bigger boxen which currently have SuSE 10.0 so probably xorg 6.8 (or earlier) on them.

So my Dual headed AMD-64 with Radeon X800GTO is probably not a good place to try it out !

Looks like the 30th gets the vote so I'll see if the hall is free and report back.
Cheers, BJ
If anyone is interested I can bring along my mini-ITX box that's configured for playing DVDs with hardware MPEG decoding and 5.1 sound. It plays DVDs with < 5% CPU load.

I'd like to see that and ask you a few questions. I've still not got on with building my planned mythTV PVR.
Thanks!

OK. I tried to get DVD playback working a while ago with no luck, but putting Gentoo 2006.0 and Xorg 7.0 on the mini-ITX box has meant that it all pretty much just worked.

Either are OK for me, though I have a presentation to do on the 29th (see http://www.ccs-miw.org/ ).

Due to Idunno's arrogance on IRC I will now NOT be comming on Sunday.
I see you don't want to show the arrogance. Nice. Right - so suggesting that using packages rather than doing "make install" is now arrogant? Interesting definition.
I think you were just looking for a get out clause, dear. Now why not sit down, have a nice cup of tea, and understand that your viewpoint isn't the only valid one in the world.
/me offers PeterO some hugs and a less explosive temperament.
Cheers, Brett.

PeterO please don't let a disagreement on irc prevent you from the delights of Syleham. We are all human and sometimes things get out of hand in the irc channel. Remember if iDunno spouts off in meatspace we can always sit on him. :-)
