Hi All
I am Head of Software Engineering at validus (http://www.validus-ivc.co.uk) in Norwich. I recently switched from Windows Vista to Ubuntu 9.10 desktop as more and more of the applications I am running on Windows will run anywhere and I wanted something faster and more stable and also wanted to add a new string to my bow. I've tried to switch to Linux on a number of occasions over the years, but this is the only time I've stuck with it. In fact going back to Windows, as I will have to when I return to work in a week, feels horrible and slow now.
I am also moving my hosted webserver to my own webserver at home running Ubuntu 9.10 server.
I joined the LUG primarily to try and get some help with some issues I'm having, but I will put those into separate emails. For those of you interested, you can read my blog here: http://paulgrenyer.blogspot.com.
Hi Paul
I am also new on this list as well.
I have been using Linux for a bit thou and mainly use kubuntu just because of I like KDE over Gnome, but would have to agree when ever I use windows it just feels slower.
Hope that you stick with Linux and enjoy what it offers
Regards Ian Porter

Hi Paul,
Welcome to Alug, it's always nice to have new members here, I see that your workplace is very close to the Coach & Horses, it'd be nice to see you come along to one of the pub meets (2nd Thursday of each month, 8pm onwards).
Thanks Adam
Hi All
Thank you all very much for the warm welcome!
I will certainly try and ask my questions as humbly as possible and giving all the relevant information. However, I am still really quite new to this and I'm sure I will ask some stupid questions too.

I'll make it sometimes if I can, but unfortunately my wife has just started working on a Thursday and since with have a 6 year old boy, getting out at the same time can be difficult.
I'm just about to post my first question, so brace yourselves! ;-)

Welcome to the LUG.
I won't subscribe to the blog because it tries to force people into agreeing to Google's hostile terms and uses the discriminatory "Visual verification" system which Google offer instead of proper anti-spam tools.
Best wishes,

MJ - Why not just use the RSS or Atom feed? I did and there's no terms and conditions to sign, no visual verification. Or am I missing something?

The "visual verification" (which is not really visual verification) is on the comment form, but I don't subscribe to many blogs which won't let me reply.
Hope that explains,
