So, I have a new to me laptop. How do I sensibly and safely transfer passwords, bookmarks etc onto it? I've tried to back them up before now (Firefox's 'import bookmarks from html' option) but I'm not wholly confident about that method. Step by step please.
And is my assumption that because it has more memory and is newer than my current pc that a 64-bit OS (Cinnamon Mint if you’re interested) reasonable?

P.S. For Steve: sadly I think the scanner has gone on to the choir invisible...

Well, I'm not called Steve, but I did get my Epson scanner working under Mint 19.1, eventually. It was a considerable PITA. What kind of scanner have you? Perhaps I can help?

Thing is, Huge, I've also tried plugging it in and nothing happened, either on its part (key point) or my pc's so I think that rather spells the end for it. (Also tried another ac/dc adapter.) It had a good life.

Define "nothing". The scanner powers up, but when you plug it into the PC nothing happens?

You may recall, the scanner is "dumb".
It won't do anything without being configured first, and without a driver file (actually a ROM file) called SnapScan_1212U_2.bin being copied onto your computer.
I think the requirements were to install XSane, and XSane extras. Copy the configuration from your old machine, and copy scapscan_1212u_2.bin to the equivalent location on your new machine.
I think the last time we did this was back in 2010. I think these are the relevant threads from the archive. https://lists.alug.org.uk/pipermail/main/2010-October/028481.html

Does it still work on the old machine? It may be time to replace it anyway, it must be >10 years old! I don't have mine anymore, so apart from pointing you at the old thread, I can't help much.
I think try plugging it into the new machine, turning it on, then typing lsub if any of the output says "agfa" or "snapscan" then you may be able to get it to work. If not, then it's probably dead.
Hope that helps.
If it helps, I have a multifunction printer/scanner now, EPSON sx420w. Setting that up was a doddle. It worked straight out of the box with both simplescan and xsane.

Nope. The scanner does not show any signs of life.

I'm happy to leave it be now. My fault for derailing the thread, I think...
I'm just keen to know how to set up this 'new' laptop in such a way that I have all the bookmarks this one does, and Thunderbird doesn’t lose my old emails.

I've done this myself recently. I think it's well covered in Thunderbirds (and similarly firefox assuming you use it) help files.

Sorry, I have to ask another question. What does it mean by 'go up two levels'? To where?

Step 2 says "Click "Open Directory"" For me this opens a file browser pointing at a folder called /home/steve/.thunderbird/SOMERANDOMDIGITS.default
When says go up two levels, it means press the up/back a directory level button. For me that's shown as an up-arrow but it could be different for you. It means, go to the parent/previous directory of the current directory, twice.... For me I start in /home/steve/.thunderbird/at2okpjt.default Going up 1 level takes me to /home/steve/.thunderbird/ Going up the 2nd level takes me to /home/steve/
It's basically getting you to where you can see the .thunderbird directory to enable you to copy it.
