Does anyone have a Zaurus SL-3100?
I'm thinking of getting one particularly for running some Linux in-car navigation software with verbal instructions. I know this Zaurus has a built-in speaker but would like to know from someone who may have experience of it whether it can produce a respectable volume.
Thanks.

I have an SL-C3000, but I'm not quite sure how loud the speaker is - I'll see if I can have a play later, but it's running 2.6 and I don't think the sound driver has been ported to that yet.
In terms of car navigation software is there anything easily available for ARM? Even the commercial stuff I can find is all x86 only. It'd be nice if TomTom released a build for Linux/ARM, given that's what their devices run. :)

That would be nice if you could!

I don't know of any but I'm no authority. I have Navigator, on my Thinkpad, from Directions Ltd, a British company, but I believe that they do only i386. It's the only Linux software I've paid for (£35.00)!!!

I have only just realised, yes I know I'm slow on the uptake, that applications for the Zaurus won't be x86 so the navigation software I currently have won't run on the Zaurus anyway :-((
The processor, I believe, is a Intel XScale PXA270 CPU and I don't know what architecture version would be required for that.

Isn't the PXA270 an ARM variant ?

Yes. Which would be why I asked about ARM navigation software in my initial reply...

I could possibly arrange for one of the TomTom units to be available at the next kit meet. *hint* The system is held on a removable sd card and I am sure the boot image is something silly that can be toyed with.
However the maps are activated via a challenge/response code that is (I think) seeded from the hardware itself, so good luck running the application on another device.

Heh. We had a conversation along these lines on IRC earlier today.

I think I'll just concentrate on trying to get more data into OpenStreetMap (http://www.openstreetmap.org/).

You may be interested to know that Directions Ltd have told me that they _may_ port their new version of Navigator, due out around Christmas, to ARM for the Zaurus.
