Hi I have been trying to configure my onboard modem on my K7S5A board as I need my serial port for ham radio control. Suse 9.0, finds the modem but I have tried TTYS0 to S4 with no luck. Does anybody know what I should assign it to, or is there other things I should look at? Regards Nick Daniels

Do you know if it is a hardware modem or a Winmodem. if it is integrated into your motherboard then it is most likely a Winmodem. For drivers and test software you should try www.linmodems.org

Thanks all It is a winmodem-Suseplugger comes up with:- silicon Intel 537(winmodem) Driver Info #0: Driver Status: slamrmo is active Driver Activation Cmd: "modprobe slamrmo" But thinking : " I wish to free up my serial port " , I can a) Put external modem on parallel port!!! b) Buy card with 2 serial ports or buy a cheap PCI non winmodem Best Wishes Nick Daniels

a) Put external modem on parallel port!!!
Are you sure this is possible???
b) Buy card with 2 serial ports or buy a cheap PCI non winmodem
Cheap PCI non winmodem would be my preference.

No!!!? But it does have a parallel port connecter on it!, The modem that is. Just me not thinking

I think you'll find that's a serial connector, not a parallel. Expect much fire and brimstone if you plug that into your parallel port! My Hayes modem has a 25 way D type connector which is most definately serial.
Not that I've had bad experiences with 25ways D types, just spent most of this afternoon working out the wiring for a 25 to 9 pin RS422 adapter.

From Googling, Lvlug:-
I got to keep this. The sign of a true geek. Not only is this a bunch of cryptic junk, it's a bunch of cryptic junk that works.

If I plug a modem into the parallel port of a computer with Linux, what would be the string for the config of a program to locate it?
/dev/tty?
Depends on your kernel version. 2.4 has a new dev filesystem so things are a bit different. The following perl script should configure it for you.
#!/usr/bin/perl @P=split//,".URRUUxR";@d=split//,"\nem gniddik eb ot toG ev'uoY";sub p{@p{"r$p","u$p"}=(P,P );pipe"r$p","u$p";$p++;($q*=2)+=$f=!fork;map{$P=$P[$f|6&ord$p{$_}];$p{$_}=/ $P/i? $P:close$_}%p}p;p;p;p;p;map$p{$_}=~/[P.]/&&close$_,%p;wait until$?;map/r/&&<$_>, %p;print$d[$q]
