Some extra information which, I think, may answer one of my own questions.

I have just connected my laptop to the network and tried to print to the same remote printer. This works perfectly well.

I also see in lpr.log:

machine1 lpd[28252]: machine3.mynetwork requests recvjob timicrol machine1 lpd[28252]: reading df file for timicrol machine1 lpd[28252]: finished reading df file for timicrol machine1 lpd[28252]: reading cf file for timicrol machine1 lpd[28252]: finished reading cf file for timicrol

I don't see this when trying to print from the Mandrake machine (Machine2) so I suspect there is nothing going to the remote host (Machine1).

Anything I could try on the Mandrake machine to try and sort this? (Anyone have a steam roller ?)
