Hi all,
I've thrown together some VERY basic web pages, take a peek at:
http://www.cpc.uea.ac.uk/alug/
These are just an idea of a framework that we could all knock into shape. On the website front, I agree anglian.lug.org.uk is the right thing to do.
I think we could also do with throwing together some form of press release that we can send out to all the local papers; something that gives them enough background info to give us a bit of free advertising.
Before we do any mainstream advertising, however, I think we need to make a firm decision on venue/date for the first meeting. I've not heard any major dissent, so do we go for some time over Sat 1st/Sun 2nd/Mon 3rd May? If no-one else is silly enough to volunteer, I'll sign up to co-ordinate the first meeting.
I'll also happily stump up the 47$ to make us a member of "Groups of Linux Users Everywhere" (GLUE - http://www.ssc.com/glue/) in the hopes of getting some freebies to give away at the first meeting. Does this seem like a good idea?
Andrew.

I do like the logo, I must say. Dunno if we should add a Tux to it?

OK, I'm knocking: No to web forum: a mailing list archive and an openFAQ would be more useful, I feel (even though SF2 is my code ;) ) And I think moving the mailing list to lug.org.uk's majordomo ASAP is the best thing to do.

Good idea. Have we any experienced press release writers in the list?

OW! What kind of freebies?
Also, we should get listed at lugww.nllgg.nl as soon as the domain is up. It's rather more international than GLUE, I think.

Yup, fair enough.
Afternoon of the 2nd?
Sounds good to me. Everyone else?
OW! What kind of freebies?
Bumper stickers, CDs, Linux Journal ROMs etc.
On a related note, http://www.pbassill.phatcatz.net/ - signs of life in Cambridge. Anyone want to contact them and see if they want to join us on 2nd?
Andrew.

Maybe worth it, then. Up to you. They're your $s.

If no-one else has jumped and done it, I'll email Cambridge, Northants and Herts to see if anyone there wants to join us.

I'll have a go at creating a site over the next few days - I'm getting Apache up and running here so once everything's ready I'll give you all a URL. I'm pleasantly surprised at the speed in which the aforementioned site has gone up - blistering!
What I'd like to do is incorporate stuff like /. and freshmeat headlines in the front page and stuff suitable for all Linux users like links to major distros and websites, and make ALUG a headline link off it. I'll see how I progress then we can merge ideas and colour schemes :)

A web forum might be more useful if we announce date/times when we meet and invite people over during these 'virtual' meets. Might be useful for newbies in uk.comp.os.linux when they need help and don't know about #Linuxhelp. This is however a side issue.
I assume we'll get our own box with appropriate s/w - PERL/CGI access, etc?
And I think moving the mailing list to lug.org.uk's majordomo ASAP is the best thing to do.
Agreed. UEA isn't know for it's uptime - at least in the dept. I know of ;-(

OK - here goes:
PRESS RELEASE
Announcement of new Linux User Group for UK Anglia region.
The Anglian Linux User Group (ALUG) is pleased to announce its formation in April 1999. LUGs are groups of people who share an interest, however deep, in Linux, the Open Source Operating System built by Linus Torvalds and many programmers around the world.
ALUG's fifteen starter members wish to invite anyone who has an interest in Linux and who reside in the Anglia UK region to join our group and share their experiences (good and bad) with like-minded people. Very often the Internet is used for supporting Linux users around the world and it is the intention of ALUG to provide localised support to Anglian Linux users in the form of regular meetings, details of which can be found at our website ______, posted to the Internet newsgroup uk.comp.os.linux, and posted to the alug-announce mailing list which is supplemented by a more general mailing list for members to communicate on.
We hope that ALUG will grow in time to provide it's members with the best possible information, localised support services and offerings of cheap (and free!) Linux software, plus educative discussions and speeches at our meetings.
ALUG's first meeting will take place on ____ at ___. See you there!
For more information on ALUG, please visit us on the web: http://_______ or e-mail ________.
For information on Linux and other Open Source initiatives, please visit the following websites: http://www.linux.org http://www.opensource.org (?)

Afternoon of the 2nd?
Weekends are good for me. I live in Norwich but am a student in Colchester so bear in mind I may have to travel up on a train back home and grab a car to come on Sat or Sun, then hit reverse.
If no-one else is silly enough to volunteer, I'll sign up to co-ordinate the first meeting.

OW! What kind of freebies?
No idea. I'd quite like the idea of getting cheap distro CDs with updates though. Anyone got a CD burner? I'm sure we could get a good deal on blank CDs.
Also, we should get listed at lugww.nllgg.nl as soon as the domain is up. It's rather more international than GLUE, I think.
Get listed everywhere :)

Take a look at www.svlug.org who do a similar thing. You can even download the (Perl) code from them.

I think a web FAQ is a better option, still. Doing real-time chat is far easier on IRC (hey, you can find me when I'm at work and some other times as MrMarkJ, #slashdot, irc.slashnet.org)

Computing centre machines are unstable as hell, it is true. One of the student Union machines has been up for 94 days now (that's what the stu.uea bit means). I'm more concerned about getting another reprimand for abuse of Union facilities and getting the list where it doesn't depend on one of my employers. Besides, anglian.lug.org.uk makes more sense than stu.uea and it can probably get digests, etc there.
[Press release]
One "it's" in place of "its" that I spotted. I'd also rather link to linuxberg and linux.org.uk rather than the contentious opensource.org and linux.org (OK, so I hate Malcolm McLagan or whatever his name is because of the LSA fiasco).
Thanks for that. I guess we wait for Andrew to put his name on it, people to improve it (if that's possible), then shove it out?

I suspect when we get nearer the time we can sort out a less redundant way of organising transport in some/most cases. Especially as this meeting isn't in a major centre.

Cuppla things...
There is a railway station at Woodbridge, I'm not sure of the train times/frequencies. I am willing to pick people up from the station (about a mile) if they call me in advance at the Hotel (leave a message if I'm not there). I am also able to offer lifts from and to Ipswich on the day concerned. Again, this needs co-ordination.
I have a CD-burner (Yamaha 4416 CRWS-VK) arriving this week, which, time permitting, could be used for the LUG. Painful though it is to admit it, it'll be on one of my 95 PCs, because the software is good...

Thanks for the offer: I might just have to take you up on it. I can get to Ipswich station with ease (it'll be from Colchester). I assume we're talking the weekend here.
Now all we need is a start time...

Yep, not bad. I'm looking at integrating something from Redhat.com, a bit of the news sources, something LUG-ish and a bit of originality ;-)

Ah, been looking for the irc servers. Found #Linux(help) on EFNet so far (nick: Bloob). I should be on irc (EFNet or Slashnet) most of Saturday so if any of you wants to join me or maybe take a look at my devel www pages, come on by.

schoolbox is terrible. I think it has a script which sees Friday night and performs a segfault ;-(

I'll prob be on slashnet tomorrow morning around 1000 or so. I'm off to Norwich for the day then, so I won't be on the net. Some of you might like to see my first attempt at a resources page at http://www.mth.uea.ac.uk/~h089/alug/start2hack.html

IMO, linux.org.uk, which is run by kernel hacker Alan Cox, is a lot more official than linux.org, which is run by OS/2 user McLagan.

For those of you who aren't/have never been at UEA, SF2 is a website "news engine" which can be seen in action at http://www.stu.uea.ac.uk/sf2/ and is rather "slashdottish" in style.
To see just how hyperactive I am, my projects list is at http://www.mth.uea.ac.uk/~h089/ which may give some clue as to why I have so little time.
