Hi
Im still trying to sort out these problems getting Linux installed on this old Umax laptop.
Ive tried booting Limux Mint 9 LXDE and it ran the live CD once and part installed. Since then no success in getting back to the Live desktop. It just sits on the boot screen doing nothing.
The same thing happens with Lubuntu.
I did successfully boot the Ubuntu alterntaive installer and it started installing no problems, but I cancelled it as Ubunut is a bit too heavy for this hardware.
I dont think it is a hardware fault as it runs XP no problems.
Also I did have Linux Mint 9 LXDE installed on another hard drive and it booted to it and ran, also it has booted to the live CD once and all hardware including sound works.
So any ideas?
Simon

It does sound like a cd drive fault still. Drives can vary at what media they can read if they are tired. Also pressed media is almost always easier for a drive to read than burnt media.
Does mint have an option on the initial live cd boot to check the media ? Or can you try burning at a lower speed ? or different media ?
Also run memtest86+ just to be sure, yes I know it appears to work on XP but it is still worth trying. Particularly as you appear to have upgraded the ram in that machine. Let it run a full pass.
Also live installers are a bit erm painful in that little ram. Does mint offer an alternative installer image ? Might go a bit smoother for you.
One other thing...can you stop starting a new thread for the same topic please ?

I concur that that would be nice, but having just glanced at Simon's headers, I'd say that it may well be out of the scope of his current mail client...
(Appears to be EPOC Mail then talking to MSN servers - RUN AWAY, RUN AWAY!)
EPOC Mail appears to not bother with anything as useful as a In-Reply-To or References header... Those would be too useful!
Ho hum,

We each have to work with what we have perhaps..... Footnote to Simon's mails is this - (sent using Sony Ericsson P990i)
Ho hum,
Hi
I have resolved my problems. I used a different machine to install Linux Mint on this hard drive then popped it in the Umax laptop.
It boots and works no problem. Everything working including wireless and sound and is pretty quick too.
Secondly, yes I do have to work with what I have and other than my laptop which I used webmail for Windows Live mail I use a Sony Ericsson P990i with its built in mail client to access my Windows Live mail account.

Sorry I wasn't very clear, I didn't mean the broken threads as much as the new subject line for what was ultimately the same discussion as the previous thread you started.
Glad you got it working anyway.
