once more top advice from the ALUG:-) As I write this the crossover cable that I bought is performing and I'm installing slackware from one machine to the other. Thanks - I would have bought a cable before but the post is so erratic where I live that I couldn't wait, will look at switches etc in near future - expect more dumb questions...... cheers everyone, Glen
