Hello,
I'm launching a linux magazine in the UK this October and I'd like to include a round-up of all the UK linux user groups and fan clubs. If you run a group, or are a member of one, could you email me your details, including the following information:
Name of group, town, date & location of next four meets, activities (in no more than 50 words), contact person, contact email.
If you are doing anything particularly interesting, feel free to take some space and tell us about it - it'd be great if this directory could become a clearing house for as many of the UK groups as possible.
It won't cost you anything, so please email me at nick.merritt@futurenet.co.uk
Thanks!

This is excellent news. A UK magazine dedicated to Linux from Future Publishing - this should be quite good, particularly if they decide to stick cover mounted CDs with the latest distributions on it :) This is one magazine I would fork out a subscription fee for if it proves to be good.

Perhaps might be worth mentioning to them that 'area' sounds much better than 'town'. As for activities, perhaps suggest assisting other members with Linux related problems, demos of latest stuff utilising Linux (damn my creative muse - someone can no doubt rephrase that much better than I).
Regards,
Martyn

I second that. I've been getting PC Answers for ages now and think its good despite all the Windoze orientated articles. This sounds like the answers to my prayers!
I've defected (SuSE->Debian), so I'm still figuring out my way around and I want to bolt my system down. How can I list all files for a given package which aren't there or have been altered (MD5)? I had a cron job to do this with rpm, but with deb??? Any pointers, please?

Hurrah! We claim another victim :-)

Hrm. You can list all installed packages:
dpkg -l
Or, list all partial packages:
dpkg -C
Or list files installed from a package:
dpkg -L packagename
Does that help? More information can be found using "man dpkg" :-)
BTW Bill: Are you joining us on Sunday?
Andrew.

FWIW, I really like SuSE, but... I'm taking a good look at Peanut Linux at the mo.
Cheers, Laurie.

apt-get is kinda cute. That and the way I found out pppd was working was when my box tried to complete the install over the 'phone line!

Read the instructions??? Well, there's a first time for everything! I'm looking for something equivalent to "rpm -y packagename" I see there's a command debsums_gen than makes MD5sums for packages that don't have them, but how do you verify the installed files against these? Something like: cd /;for pack in /var/lib/dpkg/info/*.md5sums; do md5sum $pack; done But easier to type in a hurry :-)

Still wondering, I'm supposed to be in Yorkshire.
