This may be a rather silly question, but have you run xorgconfig, or did you just use the setting of xorg which arises at the end of the install?

I copied my xf86config file to xorg.config (as suggested in the Upgrade howtos). I also ran xorgconfig and compared the output with my copied xf86config, nothing in the display/video area was different (except the naems I'd chosen for things).
Still I'm happy now with 1600x1200 16-bit.
