AFAIK, in windows there is a separate root directory for each disk so when windows tries to resolve a path which refers back to the root directory but doesn't specify a drive letter it will assume the current drive. So, for example, if your CD drive was E: /fred/somepage.htm would resolve to E:/fred/somepage.htm Of course, Unix-like OSes are different and have a single root directory so this doesn't work. You could work round this by creating symbolic links in the real root directory for each top-level directory on the CD. You could so this automatically like: cd /mnt/cdrom ls -l | grep ^d | awk '{print "ln -s /mnt/cdrom/" $8 " /" $8;}' | sh When you've finished browsing the CD you can remove the links: cd /mnt/cdrom ls -l | grep ^d | awk '{print "rm -f /" $8;}' | sh This is a little ugly but it's all I can think of ATM.
