Some of the db replication doesn't work to well anyhow AFAIK... ...I know we had to implement some in-house code to replicate some tables manually. Unfortunately, I wasn't on that bit of the project, but I guess it must be possible.
Another project actually updated two databases in parallel rather than using some sort of replication software.

It's a general question more than anything. Assume the database does not support native replication.
