Hi,
I have just upgraded to Broadband on Freeserve. I use Mandrake 8.2 and would like to know if someone is using the Alcatel SpeedTouch USB modem with Mandrake 8.2 or even Mandrake 9.0 (as I would like to upgrade to 9.0 soon).
A brief guide about setting it up will be greatly appreciated.

Good news for mandrake users 8.1 and above have an rpm for the driver and the default kernel is already patched.
Cheers, BJ (who has no chance of getting adsl in the forseeable future)

Ouch! I don't think I know of anyone using that method. Last I heard, if you used that, you couldn't use pppd for normal dialup, but hopefully that's fixed now. It also recommends installation of binary-only software, which I can't condone.
The alternative which has had good results for me was the drivers and howto from http://speedtouch.sf.net/

As ever I bow to MJR's more extensive knowledge of the subject. I was unaware of the issues surrounding pppd. I also frown upon binary only software however sometimes there are no workable alternatives, which is a shame, cest la vie.
