Hi Guys (and of course Ladies),
I'm surprised by the relatively low spec some of you guys are running Linux on. I've got a Celeron powered box with 96mB RAM (Win98/2 word processing box) - I'll have a play and see what happens.
Any of you tinkerers connected a 'doze and Linux box via KVM for quick change one to 'tother?
Incidentally, I'm also surprised at the low regard for OOo - which is my main office in 'doze (I perforce have to have Bill's office installed 'cos most people seem to use it.) I would say that within my immediate circle - I'm the only non MS user. Can't understand why people spend so much on MS when there is so much good open source stuff out there? Perhaps I'll give AbiWord another go - the last time I tried it it was a pain - especially the blo**y US spell check (US as in RAF tech parlance as well as the place across the pond).
Cheers,
BD.

Yep, good times - specifically I only actually have a copy of windows as a sort of glorified games console - or for trying out the newest games, and I have a tendency to game for 5 minutes to get myself into (and out of) hackmode. I couldn't realistically do the work in windows, and I couldn't let myself boot into it for gaming which is essentially frivolous. Result was one frustrated me.
Ended up hooking up a kvm switch, and a little crossover patch between the two for virus scanning/file transfer etc..
'Twas fun quickly switching between gaming/work for breaks, but in the end of course I purged the beast as it takes up several gigabytes of disk space and I wanted to backup my photos onto that drive.

Yes, I do, but only as a sort of secondary way to get to my Linux box. My normal setup is running Cygwin/X on my Win2k machine and accessing my Linux fvwm2 desktop using that. I have multiple desktops on my Win2k machine so I can dedicate a complete desktop to Linux. This means I can cut/paste between Windows and Linux which is sometimes useful.
I have Belkin KVM switch which switches my keyboard and monitor to the Linux box and I occasionally just switch over to use it directly if I don't want to turn my Win2k system on. The Linux box stays on all the time.
I don't switch my mouse as my (lovely) Kensington Expert Mouse (which is actually a trackball) doesn't like being switched. I just have an old Mouse Systems optical mouse that I use on the Linux box.

I even bought a USB PS2 adapter so I could also hook the laptop into the KVM when I'm desk bound.
A KVM is essential if you don't have the desk space for multiple monitors, and if you do have multiple monitors for multiple PCs, then running Synergy helps reduce the number of keyboards and mice you need to control them all.
My lowest spec PC was K6-266 unti last year, but now it is P3-600. More than adiquate for running a Debian Linux home server - Apache, squid, firewall, and file serving, but the latter was a bit slow.
Cheers, Tim.

I have a 1GHz Celeron with 128RAM that dual boot w98SE and Zenwalk. WOeks well.

I use OO on my main laptop but it is too slow for the Celeron and which I use Abiword.
